Regain Natural Chewing Function with Implant-Supported Dentures
Unlike traditional dentures, which rest on the surface of the gums but remain prone to slip, implant-supported dentures say firmly in place at all times. The dental implants act like tooth roots, keeping your denture securely anchored to the jawbone. Dr. Brett Helton in Columbus, GA, uses digital x-rays, intraoral cameras, and other advanced innovations to help you experience the life-changing benefits of this modern treatment.
What Are the Benefits of Implant-Supported Dentures?
If you have lived with removable dentures, you know that they frequently slip out of place. The inherent instability of removable dentures can make eating or speaking difficult at times. Implant-supported dentures address these issues by providing superior stability. With this solution, you can enjoy a restored natural chewing function.
Dental implants are a permanent solution to tooth loss. The implant posts replace missing tooth roots and prevent jawbone atrophy. Jaw tissue recession follows tooth loss, but by placing multiple dental implants, you can retain a healthy smile foundation.
Patients who undergo implant placement to support their dentures can benefit from:
- A need for far fewer adjustments to their dentures due to bone retention in the jaw
- Improved speech clarity
- The ability to eat tough or chewy foods with ease
- Restored confidence when speaking or chewing
Are You a Candidate?
Candidates for implant-supported dentures are often dissatisfied with their traditional dentures, or they are about to undergo multiple tooth extractions. Dental implants come with unique candidacy considerations. Dr. Helton will need to determine that you have adequate jawbone density to support dental implants. Our office uses advanced imaging technology like digital x-rays to determine if you are a candidate for implant surgery.
If you are found to have insufficient jawbone density, Dr. Helton can recommend a trusted oral surgeon who can perform a bone graft. Bone graft surgery can add months to your overall treatment timeline, but when you consider that implants can benefit your smile for 40 years or longer, many patients agree the investment of time and money is justified. As with any surgery, patients should be in good overall health and free of conditions that can complicate surgery, such as gum disease. For the best results, you should quit smoking prior to surgery and continue to abstain after your smile rehabilitation is complete.
How Implant Dentures Work
Treatment Overview
Once your candidacy has been established, Dr. Helton will refer you to a trusted oral surgeon who places dental implants. Dr. Helton will closely coordinate your treatment with your oral surgeon. During your initial oral surgery, your surgeon will begin by administering local anesthesia to numb the tissues where the implants will be placed. Sedation is often used to ensure that you are relaxed throughout the treatment.
If you are dissatisfied with your removable denture, implant-retained prosthetics can deliver life-changing benefits.
Once you are comfortable, your doctor will make an incision in your gums before placing the implant post in your jawbone. Once all of the implants are placed, any incisions will be sutured and gauze will be used to control bleeding. You will be given a temporary prosthetic while the dental implants heal. After three to six months, when the implants have integrated with the jaw, Dr. Helton will take impressions of your jaws, which will be used to create your permanent implant-supported dentures. Once the denture is complete, you will return to our office to have it attached to the implants.
Dr. Helton and his team are by far and away the best dental practice I have ever found. Outstanding in every respect and priced reasonably. I could not recommend them more highly.
