Comparing Dentures

Patients today have many choices when it comes to replacing missing teeth. However, the choice is often influenced by a number of factors. Things you may want to consider:

Tooth Loss Budget Dental Health
Traditional Complete Denture Missing all teeth Budget-friendly option. Treatment is usually covered at least in part by insurance. Complete dentures are an option for most people. However, dentures do not stimulate bone growth, and their constant rubbing can actually accelerate bone loss. This means you will need to have your traditional dentures relined or replaced periodically.
Traditional Partial Denture Missing several teeth Budget-friendly option. Treatment is usually covered at least in part by insurance. The clasps on traditional partial dentures may cause wear on nearby teeth. In addition, they don't prevent jawbone atrophy, which can lead to further tooth loss.
Implant-Supported Denture Missing all or some teeth Implant surgery adds to the cost of treatment and is not usually covered by insurance. Our office can determine if your insurer will cover any of the costs. Patients need sufficient jawbone density to support dental implants. If support is lacking, they may need bone grafts to create a stable foundation for implants. However, implants can help prevent further bone loss. If cared for, implants can last for decades.

Why Do Dentists Prefer Implant-Supported Teeth?

Patients love the security they get with implant-supported dentures, but implants also offer important health benefits that dentists put a high value on.

Implant-supported restorations are the only tooth replacement option that replaces both the tooth and tooth root. While many people don't give much thought to tooth roots, they play an important role beyond just holding your tooth in place. Tooth roots also transmit vibrations to the jawbone from daily activities, such as eating. This signals the body to build more bone in the jaw, preventing bone recession that can cause more tooth loss.

Bone loss starts as soon as you lose a tooth. If you have been missing teeth for a while, Dr. Helton can help determine if a bone graft or sinus lift is needed to build up the bone before implant surgery. Our Columbus dentist can also treat gum disease, which must be curbed to prevent implant complications.

A Closer Look at Implant-Supported Dentures

Dentures are secured directly to the implants, which are surgically placed in the jaw. This provides bone-saving benefits and maximum stability for your dentures.

Denture Candidates

You may be a good candidate for dentures if:

You are missing most or all of your natural teeth

Dentures are designed for people with significant tooth loss. If you are only missing one or a few teeth, other options like a dental crown supported by a dental implant may be better for you.

You are in good oral health

You must be free from gum disease and tooth decay before you qualify for dentures. You must also have sufficient jaw bone material for both traditional dentures and implant-supported dentures. This ensures a healthy foundation for your new smile.

You Are Not Alone Call us today to request a denture consultation

Traditional Denture Treatment from Start to Finish

Timelines may vary depending on your unique situation. Following your initial consultation for dentures in Columbus, GA, we will devise a custom treatment plan.

Here is a look at a typical treatment timeline.

Preparatory Treatment

If you need preparatory treatments to address bone loss, tooth decay, or gum disease, those will need to be completed before your denture treatment.

Impressions

Your dentist will take digital impressions of your mouth using advanced technology. 3D cone beam scanners allow us to get a full and accurate picture of your mouth, allowing our trusted lab to craft beautiful, natural-looking dentures that fit comfortably and securely.

Denture Fitting

It takes approximately two weeks for our lab to create your dentures. Once they arrive back at our dental office in Columbus, you will have an appointment to see whether any revisions are necessary. There, your dentist will ensure they fit properly and comfortably. He will make any necessary adjustments to ensure your dentures do not cause discomfort and will not move around in your mouth.

Implant-Supported Denture Timeline

Implant-supported dentures have a slightly different timeline due to dental implant placement. Though your unique plan may vary somewhat, the general steps include:

Impressions and Prep

Just like traditional dentures, any preparatory treatment will need to be completed first, and then impressions will be taken of your mouth.

Anesthetic

Before your dental implant placement, your dentist will thoroughly numb the area. We also offer sedation dentistry using nitrous oxide to ensure you are completely comfortable.

Implant Placement

Small incisions will be made at the implant site before Dr. Helton inserts them into the jawbone. Four to eight implants are used along a single dental arch. If you need both arches restored, the same process will be performed on the other arch.

Healing Period

Over the next three to six months, the implants will fuse with the jawbone in a process called osseointegration.

Abutments

You will return to our Columbus office for another procedure to place your abutments or small connector pieces. Another short healing period will follow.

Denture Placement

Once you are fully healed, your dentist will secure your denture to the dental implant posts, making any small adjustments as needed. Immediately following this appointment, you can expect your restoration will look, feel, and function just like natural teeth.

“Highly recommend Dr. Helton and his entire team."

“Dr. Helton was so thorough and patient with explaining the procedure and making sure I was pain-free. I was so pleased to know that they perform root canals in-house. This procedure resolved a long-time painful problem I was having. Highly recommend Dr. Helton and his entire dental team."

Caring for Your Dentures

Georgia woman smiling

  • Implant-Supported Dentures

The great thing about implant-supported dentures is that you treat them just like natural teeth. The dentures are secured to the implants and are only removed by your dentist for exams and professional cleanings. Brush at least twice a day for two minutes with a soft bristle toothbrush and non-abrasive toothpaste. Don't forget to floss!

  • Traditional Dentures

Traditional dentures are removable and require different care. To clean your dentures, remove them from your mouth and soak them using a denture cleaner. Use a soft-bristled brush to remove any plaque. Be sure to clean your mouth, tongue, and gums with another soft-bristled brush. Remove any remaining denture adhesive from your dentures and mouth.

Follow proper care and maintenance to keep your restored smile beautiful and healthy for years to come. Your dentist at our Columbus dental practice will provide you with all the information you need to maintain your beautiful new smile for as long as possible.

Frequently Asked Questions About Dentures in Columbus, GA

How long do dentures last?

With proper care, your denture can last for up to 15 years or longer. However, it is important to remember all dentures will wear over time and eventually need to be replaced. Implant-supported dentures last slightly longer, and the implants themselves are designed to last for decades.

Do dentures hurt?

There may be some minor discomfort as you adjust to your dentures. However, it should not be painful and any discomfort should reside within a week or so. If your dentures cause you significant pain or cause persistent irritation to your mouth, they may need to be adjusted. Please contact our Columbus office so we can schedule an appointment and address your issues promptly.

Will people be able to tell I have dentures?

No. You may have some slight changes to your speech as you adjust to your dentures. However, we use precise techniques and technology to produce life-like results for both traditional and implant-supported dentures. An added benefit of implant-supported dentures is there is no risk of slippage when you eat or speak.
